Janet Ruth Beebe 26 year Breast Cancer Survivor
In 1983, Janet, while breast feeding her 6 month old baby, found a lump in her breast that turned out to be cancer. At age 33, with a new baby, two other children and a husband to care for, Janet was devastated with the bad news. After many doctors and many tests showing that Janet had nothing to worry about, Janet’s silent alarm inside kept telling her that the lump she found in her breast was something serious and it needed to come out. Finally, Janet found a doctor that would take the tumor out for testing and told her that her pushing paid off. Janet had surgery and treatment for her breast cancer that had already spread to her lymph nodes. With no one to turn to, Vicki Castleberry, founder of Bosom Buddies, a new organization that gave support to breast cancer patients, visited Janet in the hospital. This gave her the emotional support she much needed. Months after her treatment, Janet started helping Vicki as a volunteer in the mission to help support breast cancer patients. For 23 years, even though Janet had a breast cancer recurrence and two surgeries for skin cancer, making her a 4 time survivor of cancer, she continued helping Vicki in this mission. While helping Vicki, Janet also volunteered for the American Cancer Society for over 20 years, helping them coordinate their “Reach to Recovery” program. In 2007, Janet created “The Breast Cancer Survivors’ Network, Inc., a grass-roots, non-profit organization. Janet and Vicki’s friendship continues today. Janet mission continues to grow while 150+ volunteers help maintain and broaden the much needed programs like 30+ support groups and “Gift Closets”. With the help of volunteers, this network helps thousands of breast cancer patients each year. Today, Vicki and many others, support Janet’s mission to expand these programs that help new patients remain Survivors!
