This program, honoring Vicki Castleberry’s tireless efforts for many years, is to help each breast cancer patient individually. It is for patients that have personal needs during their treatment. We want to make sure their treatment period is as smooth as possible and BCSN wants to help “one patient at a time”. Vicki Castleberry started helping breast cancer patients, before most of us knew anything about breast cancer. In 1980, when Vicki had her cancer, she faced a mastectomy and one year of chemo with no one to talk to. She thought she was going to die. The doctor told her husband Larry, that she had 6 years to live. In those days, there were only a few cancer support groups, but none for just breast cancer. In 1983 Vicki decided to start a group in her home by asking a few breast cancer patients that she had met, come to her home and share their feelings with each other. She started spreading her ideas of support group and other breast cancer programs for patients all over the state of Georgia. She started a non-profit to help breast cancer patients with programs and support groups. She was one of the first breast cancer survivors in the Atlanta area to start a support group to help breast cancer patients. Vicki has helped thousands of breast cancer patients, whether it be helping them find a support group or taking them for a mammogram. Her heart is big as she continues to hve a support group in her area. Vicki is still here 29 years later, and hopes that everyone can be a survivor!
